The Competitive Bidding Program for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) was established  by the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA).The Program fundamentally changes Medicare’s approach to reimbursing DMEPOS suppliers like Handi Medical Supply under Medicare Part B, from the current use of fee schedules, to a system which sets reimbursement rates through a bidding process between the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and designated suppliers. While attending the Handi Medical Education and Equipment Conference, Cheryl Meyers and Linda Lorentzen, Patient Services staff at the ALS Association, approached Steven DuFresne from The Comfort Company after noticing the company’s vision statment was: “quietly making lives more comfortable.” The Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Loan Pool is always in need of various types of cushions for people with ALS to use on both power and manual wheelchairs. Most often insurance companies will cover the cost of one cushion for a person with ALS, but the reality is that they may need 2 or 3 cushions of various materials to provide comfort when using mobility devices for extended periods of time. The Comfort Company, with Steven’s encouragement, provided 8 different kinds of cushions worth $1,380 to the Chapter’s DME Loan Pool. On behalf of all the individuals with ALS who will benefit from the donation, “Thank you to The Comfort Company!”

On Saturday, April 9th four Handi team members attended the Muscular Dystrophy’s Black and Blue Ball. The event was held at Treasure Island Casino in Red Wing, Minnesota. Families, Therapists, Physicans, supporters of the MDA all had a fabulous night of dancing, eating and raising money for a good cause. Read more
