 Physician Groups Release New COPD Guidelines

PHILADELPHIA — August 1, 2011 — The American College of Physicians (ACP), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), American Thoracic Society (ATS), and European Respiratory Society (ERS) today released a joint clinical practice guideline on diagnosing and treating stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Annals of Internal Medicine, the flagship journal of the American College of Physicians (ACP). Representatives from the American Association for Homecare met yesterday with the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to discuss problems associated with the competitive bidding program for HME.

 As mandated by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (and modified by the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008), federal law requires GAO to conduct a study of the bidding program and issue a report, the association noted.

 The Japanese study assigned 10 healthy men with an average age of about 22 to drink three different alcohol beverages over three weeks:

 0 grams as a control.
0.5 gram as a low dose of alcohol.
One gram of pure ethanol per kilogram of body weight as a high dose.
The men had the drinks about 100 minutes before going to bed.
