Rep. Price unveils H.R. 1717 which would replace competitive bidding with market pricing program.

Senior members of the House Ways and Means Committee Rep. Tom Price, M.D. (R-Ga.) and Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) have introduced H. R. 1717, a bill that would repeal CMS’s competitive bidding program and replace it with the industry’s Market Pricing Program.

Called the Medicare DMEPOS Market Pricing Program Act of 2013, would amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to have the MPP to determine prices for home medical equipment. The MPP was developed based on the input of various experts including that from 240 economists, including two Nobel Laureates, with expertise in bid models and game theory, who have opposed CMS’s program in letters to CMS, Congress and the President. In addition to the economists, various industry and patient groups have voice their support of the MPP. Read more

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will introduce a Senate companion bill to provide a separate Medicare benefit category for complex rehab technology (CRT), according to a news announcement this week from NCART Executive Director Don Clayback.

H.R. 942, the House bill that would establish such a benefit category, was co-introduced by Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) last month. The bill is titled the “Ensuring Access to Quality Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act of 2013.” Read more
